About this objectFour small cardboard drum pill boxes, each with a circular printed paper label to the shallow pull-off lid:
a) Label: "Santal // Wood Oil // (in Capsules) // To be used at the // direction of a // Qualified Medical // Practitioner".
b) With a rectangular label: "Trinitrin Tablets // Only to be used when ordered // by a Physician // Duncan Flockhart & Company, 6 North Bridge, Edinburgh." There is also a hand- stamped purple ink number "10" stamped over the bottom of the label and onto the box. The talets were prescribed for heart complaints.
c) With label: "The Tablets // (Chemists) Thomas Davies Ltd, // Medical Hall // Llandysul // Tel. 65".
d) With label "The Tablets // P. Jeyes & Co. // Limited // Chemists. // 6 The Drapery, Northampton". Just below the title text is a hard to read handwritten section in faded blue ink "....three... every...." etc.
A set of standard chemist stock boxes that would have been purchased unlabelled and labelled by the chemist, including their own personal details instructions for the prescription's use.
a,b) Were likely to be manufactured by hand as the joints were glued together from pre-cut card sections.
c,d) Were machine made a die mould pressed into card to force the card into shape, then over varnished to set. The signs of this process can be seen now in the slight flaring of the lids and veins in the card to the sides.
