Name/TitleEther Inhaler Mask: Yankauer
About this objectAn ovate steel frame with an open loop handle to one end. The central area is a raised fine mesh. There is a removable steel spring loop that runs around the frame set within the perimeter that was used to hold a piece of gauze over the mesh. The frame was held to enclose the patient's mouth and nose. Ether was dropped slowly from a bottle onto the cloth area until unconsciousness was achieved. The mask was designed by Dr Sydney Yankauer (1872-1932) an American inventor and Laryngologist. After its introduction in 1904 it became the standard mask for the induction of ether.
