Strychnine was extracted from the Strychnos Nux-vomica tree, which was also known as 'the vomiting nut' or the' poison nut tree'. The chief alkaloid constituent was extraced from the seeds. It is a toxic poison that affected nervous system, raising the blood pressure and so it tended to be used as a tonic for the circulatory system. As a 'vomiting nut' it was also used treat cases of lead poisoning and as an antidote in poisoning by chloroform. It was also used to treat pruritis and as a local anodyne in inflammations of the external ear.
